Argentina 2035:
Smart Cities Plan

Towards efficient urban management

After analyzing 30 medium-sized cities, which collectively represent 80% of the national population, we developed Argentina’s new strategy to promote R+D+i and enhance urban management efficiency and innovation, encompassing 52 recommended actions.

The challenge

Medium-sized Argentine cities, home to nearly 37 million people, face substantial challenges concerning resources and competencies. Yet, within these hurdles lies a promising potential – the chance to transform into vibrant and sustainable urban hubs, thereby enriching the overall quality of life throughout the country. Achieving this transition calls for enhancing capabilities, nurturing economic diversity, investing in infrastructure, and promoting technological literacy.

After analyzing 30 medium-sized cities, which collectively represent 80% of the national population, we developed Argentina's new strategy to promote R+D+i and enhance urban management efficiency and innovation, encompassing 52 recommended actions

Our approach

In response to this challenge, the Government of the Republic of Argentina enlisted Anteverti to spearhead research and strategic consulting. Our ultimate objective was to devise a nationwide strategy that would pave the way for the evolution of medium-sized cities across the nation towards more efficient and sustainable management models by 2035.

This endeavor encompassed defining parameters and action guidelines to stimulate innovation in realms such as intelligent infrastructure, standardized regulations for technical norms, inter-institutional coordination, and enhanced institutional management skills. Our responsibilities included:

  • Smart City Analysis: A comprehensive evaluation was conducted on-site for 30 medium-sized cities. This assessment benchmarked their Smart City progress against global peers possessing similar attributes, leading to the identification of replicable solutions.
  • Argentina’s R&D&I System Evaluation: A thorough evaluation of the R&D&I Public System provided further insights into the diagnostic process, revealing avenues for Smart City development. We also established recommendations to foster local innovation ecosystems.
  • Strategic Action Plan: A robust plan was meticulously crafted, featuring 52 prioritized actions spanning short, medium, and long-term periods. Tailored to catalyze the transformation of urban management in Argentina, these actions were laser-focused on thematic areas, stakeholders, and roles.

The impact

The culmination of this collaboration was the ‘Argentina 2035 R&D&I Agenda: Smart & Sustainable Cities.’ This innovative agenda serves as a guiding compass, steering Argentine cities toward intelligent, eco-conscious, and inclusive urban landscapes. Rooted in comprehensive analysis, the agenda empowers cities to proactively confront contemporary urbanization challenges, establishing the foundation for them to flourish as hubs of innovation and sustainability — with the potential to enhance the lives of 80% of Argentinians.
