Smart
Santiago
del Estero
Transforming this Argentine province
into a sustainable innovation hub
and flourishing tourist destination
The challenge
Situated in northern Argentina, the province of Santiago del Estero, comparable in size to Greece and home to 1.1 million people, possesses a rich natural and cultural heritage, alongside notable tech, innovation, and sports infrastructure.
To capitalize on these assets and position the province as a leader in citizen wellness, economic dynamism, innovation, and sustainability—while attracting new investments and opportunities—Santiago del Estero commissioned us to develop a Smart Region strategy to proactively advance this vision.
Based on our smart city model, we helped Santiago del Estero shape their smart province model and craft a roadmap for 2030 to improve quality of life, create economic dynamism and promote circularity and sustainability as key vectors.
Our approach
Our experts began with a thorough diagnosis of the region’s current situation. To gain a comprehensive understanding, the team conducted fieldwork in the province, engaging directly with key stakeholders across productive, academic, and governmental sectors.
Next, we aligned the region’s priorities and assets with strategic themes to drive the initiative forward, identifying gaps and defining the strategic vision for Santiago del Estero’s smart province model. This collaboration resulted in five key framework goals:
- Develop a pioneering innovation ecosystem in northern Argentina, leveraging the existing scientific and academic network.
- Implement disruptive technologies to elevate key local sectors, including agriculture, tourism, and the knowledge economy.
- Promote the circular economy and sustainability as new drivers of economic dynamism.
- Foster human capital by developing skills and professional competencies linked to added value.
- Encourage sustainable tourism that showcases the province’s natural, cultural, and sports heritage.
The impact
Our final deliverable was a detailed roadmap featuring 12 strategic actions for 2030, covering short, medium, and long-term objectives aligned with the project’s main goals. This roadmap outlines key actors for each initiative, potential barriers, the maturity of each area, and the implementation timeline.
Additionally, six quick-win actions were recommended to accelerate Santiago del Estero’s strategy implementation. The final strategy was presented at the Smart City Expo Santiago del Estero 2024, a spin-off of Barcelona’s annual Smart City Expo World Congress, which Anteverti also curate.
